Why fonts change when you edit a PDF

PDFs usually embed only the characters they actually use, known as a font subset. When a typical editor needs to draw new text, it often can't (or won't) use that subset, so it falls back to a standard font like Helvetica or Arial. The result is that telltale edit where one line looks slightly off. We go deep on this in why PDF editors change your fonts.

Step by step: edit text and keep the font

1. 1Open your PDF. Go to MythosPDF and drop the file in. It opens straight in the editor; there's no sign up.

What if a character isn't in the embedded font?

Sometimes a PDF's subset simply doesn't contain the glyph you typed. A new currency symbol or an accented letter, for example. A careless editor silently switches fonts. MythosPDF won't: it tells you which character is missing so you can decide, instead of quietly producing a mismatched line.

Checklist: did the edit really keep the font?

• •Zoom to 400% and compare letter shapes against an untouched line (look at g, a, y and digits)
• •Check the letter spacing: substituted fonts often look looser or tighter

• •Open the PDF's document properties → Fonts: there should be no new fallback font listed
